A Women-led Metalworking Space in San Diego, CA

"We're Just Getting Started"

Our space is located at The WOO, a nonprofit arts incubator in San Diego’s Barrio Logan. Workshops take place in our fabrication yard alongside ongoing projects by some of San Diego’s premier artists and makers. By day, we build. By night, our flexible fabrication yard transforms into a venue for local performers.

Our capabilities are always expanding, and schedule ever-changing. Follow us on Instagram for the latest updates.

OUR INSTRUCTORS

Andrea Postma

Andrea is a designer and former welder for the US Navy, as well as prior student of Fine Arts at Pratt Institute. She founded WOO!Welding when she realized so many fellow creatives had a desire to learn metalworking skills but didn't have access to an inclusive or affordable space to get started. Starting with one machine and a few basic tools, she began spending her Saturdays teaching simplified trade-school techniques on her closest friends. In addition to teaching design graphics and 3D modeling at Southwestern College in Chula Vista she now offers instruction in arc welding for up to 4 students at a time at The WOO.

FAQ

Are workshops only open to women?

Our space is women-led. This means positions of authority are reserved for those who identify as women and have prior professional metalworking experience. All genders are welcome to sign up for workshops.

What should I wear or bring to class?

Please wear long pants and closed-toe shoes that you don't mind getting dirty. We provide all necessary safety gear, but you’re welcome to bring your own.

We highly recommend you bring a refillable water bottle. There is a water filter and dispenser on site.

I want to become a certified welder, can you certify me?

Unfortunately, no. Our workshops are tailored to those interested in artistic or home-based welding projects. If you are interested in a trade school but would like some experience or practice time before committing to a full program, please use the contact form to reach out.

I see that the workshops take place outdoors. What if it rains?

Holding classes outdoors helps to provide affordable workshops. In the event of rain or temperatures exceeding 85F class will be cancelled, and you will have the option to reschedule or receive a full refund. In the event that temperatures exceed your comfort level, you will have the option to reschedule.

I hear metalworking is dangerous. What safety precautions do you take?

We take safety very seriously and strictly follow OSHA protocols. This being said, there are inherent risks to entering any shop space. You may review our waiver here. If at any time you feel uncomfortable using the tools or equipment our instructors are more than happy to step in.

We reserve the right to ask anyone creating a dangerous situation to leave the space.

Are children and teenagers allowed to take lessons?

Yes! However, classes are recommended for those 13 and up. Anyone under 18 will need a parent or guardian present to sign the waiver at the beginning of class.

Do you offer discounts?

Yes! We offer discounts to students, veterans, residents of Barrio Logan and artists of The WOO! Please contact us if you meet any of these criteria and would like to learn to weld.
